If you have toothpicks lying around, you can absolutely use them for nail care. However, it as orange sticks are cheap, it can be worth investing in a pack for your manicure kit.

When a Toothpick Can Work

A toothpick works perfectly well for a small, precise jobs around the nail. You can use them to:

  • Clean up small amounts of polish at the edge of the nail.
  • Placing small nail art decorations.
  • Paint dots or simple patterns.
  • Move a small amount of polish into place.

It’s best to be very gentle with the toothpick and to only on the surface of the nail, or around the free edge.

When a Toothpick Is Not a Good Idea

All that said, a toothpick is not always the best thing to use in every situation. A toothpick is sharper than a proper orange stick, has has a more pointy end. Avoid using a toothpick to:

  • Push back cuticles.
  • Dig under the nail.
  • Scrape the nail plate.

You should also avoid pressing a toothpick into broken or infected skin.

Toothpick vs Orange Stick

Although a toothpick can be very good for very small detail work, an orange stick is usually better for most nail tasks. You can use a toothpick as a substitution if you don’t have any orange sticks, but the latter is a better choice if you are willing to make a small investment.

Final Thoughts

An orange stick is a great long term choice as part of a nail kit, but it can be substituted for a toothpick if needed. Just be aware that toothpicks are smaller and sharper than toothpicks, and should be used gently, and not to dig under the nail.
