Should You File Nails Wet or Dry?

Filing your nails seems like a no brainer, but it can make a difference whether your nails are wet or dry. It’s usually better to file nails when they are dry, as they are more firm and therefore easier to shape as you wish.

Why Are Dry Nails Easier to File?

Dry nails hold their shape better than wet ones. It’s also easier to see the free edge of the nail and it leads to less bending and a smoother finish than trying to file a wet nail.

It’s also better than your nails are dry before you try to put polish on them. The nail plate swells when it is wet, so applying polish when nails are still wet makes it a lot more likely that the varnish will chip and not not stay on properly soon after application.

Is It Ever Okay to File Wet Nails?

If your nails are slightly damp when you file them, it’s really not the end of the world. However, they really will not file well straight after a bath, shower, or soaking in a manicure bowl or other vat of warm water.

What Tools Should You Use?

It’s a good idea to use a gentle emery board or glass nail file. Do not use a very rough or electronic file on your natural nails.

Quick Filing Tips

Here are some good practices for filing your nails:

  • Use light pressure.
  • Smooth rough edges first.
  • Avoid sawing at your nails aggressively.
  • Do not file too far down the sides.
  • Stop if your nail starts to peel.

Final Thoughts

For a basic home manicure, it’s a good idea to only file nails when they are dry. This gives much cleaner results, and gives you more control over the outcome of filing. If do you soak or wash your hands before a manicure, allow them to dry first.
